Meet Surround Sound
Chartered in 1973 as the Chair City Pipers, the chorus re-chartered in 2013 as Surround Sound. Our music has brought the joy of singing four-part close harmony to the lives of many North Central Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire area women. We currently have approximately 15 members and meet every Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Wakefield Place Community Room at the corner of Pine and Cross Streets in Gardner.
Weekly rehearsals include something for everyone: a mix of chorus and quartet singing, planning for shows, contests, and other performances as well as general fellowship. Visitors are welcome to experience a rehearsal or two before committing to membership. Each rehearsal is designed to foster the learning of a cappella singing in a highly supporting, non-threatening environment. Most of our singers have little or no formal training in music. The ability to read music is helpful but definitely not a prerequisite. Once visitors find the chorus, they are likely to stay. Why? Because there are many new friends here waiting to meet you!
As a performing and competing chorus, members are dedicated to learning their music and performance techniques. More senior members are here to help newer members work through the intricacies of barbershop-style music. Section leaders in tenor, lead, baritone and bass are more than willing to spend time with you to make your experience a success.
In May of 2016, Surround Sound earned special recognition at their Area competition as the recipient of the Rising Star and Carol Gardner Singing with Heart Awards. Out of the 10 competing choruses from across the Northeast United States and eastern Canada, Surround Sound earned the Rising Star Award for increasing their total score by the greatest number of points, an unheard of 90 points, over their last year’s score. When announced at the contest, an audible gasp went through the audience. That announcement was followed by the Carol Gardner Award, given for achieving the highest increase in singing score, an outstanding 47 points. Members were so proud of their accomplishments.
Surround Sound offers both benefit and paid performances. A flexible payment system allows negotiated prices for organization events, family celebrations, and delivery of singing birthday and Valentine greetings.
